COVID Fever Dream.

Last night I had a dream about punctuation. I dreamt that I was showing someone a line in a book, and I pointed out the semicolon, right there between two independent clauses, and it glowed as if it were a swarm of fireflies lighting up a warm July night sky.

“Isn’t that beautiful?” I asked; and then I thought to myself, “I should use more semicolons.”

I woke up and went downstairs and started making my toast for breakfast when a random thought hit me and made me stop what I was doing. “Wait.” I thought to myself. “Did I have a conversation yesterday about semicolons, or was that a dream?”

And then I remembered that I hadn’t talked to anyone at all yesterday, so yes. I had a dream about semicolons.

Quarantine does strange things to your mind.

Dear Readers, I actually do this. I hold up Taffy and Cindy to say “Hi” to everyone in my Korean class.

That’s the daily Fuck Trump for Wednesday, May 20. See you all on Friday!

  1. I do not have the brain power to learn Korean, but DAMN, I want to join your class just to see Taffy (and Cindy too, I love Cindy but I’m absolutely stupid for Taffy) get held up to your camera.

    What Would Taffy Do?
    Livestrong Taffy.

These are all phrases I want to wear on rubber bracelets, even though I don’t believe in doing that sort of thing.

Glad you’ve still got your sense of humour. It would be unthinkable not to hold Taffy and Cindy up to say “Hi” to your class, are the other cats jealous?

  3. Vivian! Since you mention punctuation … the first thing I thought of was this song … (it’s here, but you might have to refresh the page a few times to get it to play — but it’s so worth it: ) … it delights me so much, I went to the trouble of learning the words and trying to sing the song often so I’ll remember them. -Kate

  4. You have the soul of a copy editor! Semicolons are nice when correctly used, but they’re often abused and falling out of favor, it seems to me.

Thanks for the mid-week blog Vivian, the unicorn one had me in stitches.
Seems like some countries (UK, Germany…) are now turning to ‘go back to work and well you might get cover and you might die’. Pretty sad. We’re pretty lucky here in Australia, we’re lucky we have a good neighbour in New Zealand too. The UK is turning into crazy town like the USA, but you and us are lucky having state governments who can make different decisions to the national leaders.
Would love to see your cats on a video call! I’m sure your Korean class like it.

I’m a Special Ed teacher and I refuse to teach semicolons. My kids have enough trouble writing a complete sentence.

  7. I adore semicolons! They are one of my favorite punctuation bits and I use them quite a bit when I write my real stuff (not the blog). Hopefully not too much — I know some find them terribly annoying!
